Blog 10: Class Highlights

To be honest, I'm not sure where to start for this blog because I found myself thinking so many times that I would call being a class highlight. If anything, what I think would be the first class highlight from this class is what I learned about Mass Media and how it's used. The second class highlight that I want to touch on was when the class was shown the comic of Allah and how most of the students felt that the comic was very disrespectful while there was one student who keep his ground that image was just act of freedom of speech, in my opinion I saw how how both sides had there point. Finally, what I found to be the biggest highlight of this class was hearing about things that I've heard from my friends that I wouldn't the most people know of, example would be like how propaganda techniques were used and how the news is not controlled by the government but by people who have a lot of power and money like the Rockefeller family. I probably could go on and on  about how many thing that I learned and got from this class. And I would definitely recommend this class to anyone. Thank you so much for this class, Prof. Cecilia Deck.

Blog 6: Television

Length: 3:18
Description: The FCC swat team raid pirate radio station in Santa Cruz California.
Chapter 3: Radio, Chapter 14: Media Law.
Quiz Question: Is the first amendment is broken in this video?
Answer: No, because of the FCC represent prior restraint by a government authority.

Blog 3: Books

The three books that I choose from what I remember from my childhood that were most influential are Goosebumps: Attack of the Mutant, Mr Poppers Penguins, and Corduroy. The reason why Goosebumps: Attack of the Mutant was so influential was because of the twist with the superhero story, for Mr Poppers Penguins it was how the story introduction these little creatures (penguins) has a little family member like a pet, and for Corduroy what was the influential about it was how a teddy bear would come to life to look for his button when mall was closed. Another reason why I know these books were influential was because of how I only could remember only these three.

Week 9: Media Ethics/Media Law

http://blog.internetcases.com/category/first-amendment/

In this case, the University of Illinois sued Micron for patent infringement because he sent an email to several professors that read in part:

"Because Micron remains a defendant in a patent infringement lawsuit that [the University] filed against Micron in Federal court in Illinois on December 5, 2011, effective immediately, Micron will no longer recruit [University] students for open positions at any of Micron’s world-wide facilities."

So from this, the university asked the court to order Micron to make no future contact with any of University employee. But the court denied the motion because:
  • "the term “harassing” was vague and therefore the requested injunction would violate Rule 65(d)’s requirement that the injunction describe in reasonable detail the acts to be restrained"
  • "the prior restraint of speech would likely violate Micron’s First Amendment rights"
  • "the sought after preliminary injunction did not pertain to the injury alleged in the complaint"
I found that this case to be a good example of the first amendment.

Propaganda techniques

Watch "Samsung Galaxy S4 Commercial Graduation Pool Party" on YouTube

The two types of propaganda techniques that are being used in this advertisement are bandwagon and demonizing the enemy techniques. The way that the bandwagon technique is being used is by showing more and more customers are switching over to the samsung galaxy s4. And for demonizing the enemy technique, commercial is showing how the iPhone users don't have all the new and cool features that Samsung Galaxy s4 have.

Demonizing the enemy: Making individuals from the opposing nation, from a different ethnic group, or those who support the opposing viewpoint appear to be subhuman (e.g., the Vietnam War-era term "gooks" for National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam aka Vietcong, (or 'VC') soldiers), worthless, or immoral, through suggestion or false accusations.

Bandwagon: Bandwagon and "inevitable-victory" appeals attempt to persuade the target audience to join in and take the course of action that "everyone else is taking."
Inevitable victory: invites those not already on the bandwagon to join those already on the road to certain victory. Those already or at least partially on the bandwagon are reassured that staying aboard is their best course of action.
Join the crowd: This technique reinforces people's natural desire to be on the winning side. This technique is used to convince the audience that a program is an expression of an irresistible mass movement and that it is in their best interest to join.

Movies

One of my favorite movies of 2012-2013 would have to be Warm Bodies, which I watched online. And the reason for this is because I like how the movie went with a different type of approach compared to the typical zombie movie. Also I found it very entertaining and kind of funny.

Rotten Tomatoes: Warm Bodies

My all-time favorite movie would have to be Fight Club, which I saw it on HBO, and the main reason why I fell in love with it was because of the twist at the end and the quotes that were quoted through the movie. Also I thought the acting was perfect from Edward Norton and Brad Pittt because they both portrayed their character's personal so well.

Media Impact

So I found on an article about how media and video games were blamed for real-life problems like the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. In the article, it briefly talks about how Dr. Chris Ferguson, an associate professor of psychology at Texas A&M International University, conducted a series of multi-year studies on 11 to 18 years old kids to find out if violent video games affect their psyches. In his conclusion, he found no evidences that video games had connections to violent behavior. Also the article talks about how comics and rock music were blamed in the past for the violent behavior as well and how it's become easy for the new generations to blame violent behavior on these things. My opinion on this topic is that it is easy to blame these types of mass media on these violent acts when probably there are parents/ guardians who don't want to take the blame for it themselves.

Media Autobiography

The short essay about my relationship with the eight types of mass media: Books, Newspapers, Magazines, Movies, Recordings (Audio/Music), Radio, Television and the Internet.

  • Books: The relationship that I have had with books was not that great as I was a child and the main reason for this was because of how distracted I was with my ADD, plus I never really got into it practice because of my obsession for television and video games, which took up almost all my time. At one point in my childhood though, I was into making comic books and kids’ story until I joined some sports in high school.
  • Newspapers: Newspaper really never got my intention, the only I found myself looking at a newspaper was for a class or something.
  • Magazines: With magazines, I found my interested in technology and weight training. Also I did have a point in my life during middle school where I wanted to make a magazine about music, but sadly that didn’t last too long after seeing all the mistakes I made in my first two issues.
  • Movies: Movies have always been my favorite type of mass media. When I was in high school, I work at a blockbuster store, which I can say was my favorite job. The reason for that was because I love talking about movies, helping my customer finds the perfect movie for their night, and just my connection with this type of mass media.
  • Recordings (Audio/Music): For this type of mass media, I didn’t have much experience of this type of mass media before high school because I was not that interested it, but after I found my love for all types of music.
  • Radio: My relationship with radio didn’t start until after high school, mainly because I didn’t find myself listening to it until I got my first car around that time. The only things that I have found from the radio that interest me are the prizes that you can win and the music.
  • Television: This is one of my top favorite types of mass media. Since I can remember I have always been captured by this type of mass media. Mainly when I was young, I was inspired by it that I wanted to grow up and be a cartoonist. My family saw this and went out of their way to get me cartoonist’s kits and programs that would help reach my dream job. After sometime, I eventually lost interest in it because I found myself comparing my work to others.
  • Internet: The relationship I had with the internet didn’t seem to start until high school. I think the thing that got me in it first might have been when MySpace first became big and then I found myself using it more after I learned that I could hack phones and get free games.
